An easy day hike in the heart of the Italian Dolomites

Starting point

Parking in the Passo Falzarego road saddle. The road from Cortina d'Ampezzo leads to the saddle. A signposted path leads from the saddle into the mountains.

Description of the hike

There are two very different paths to Monte Nuvoloau 2 574 m above sea level. A ferrata leads from the Passo Giau to the summit. From Passo Falzarego, the mountain can be reached comfortably by mountain paths. We opted for the easier walking option this time. So we left the car in the parking lot at the Passo Falzarego road saddle. From there we set off along the marked trail. The trail leads first through pastures where a large number of sheep were grazing. (photo) The trail ascends gently, still in open countryside. As we gained altitude, we moved from the pastures to a rockier landscape. The trail continued along the base of Monte Averau (photo) to the saddle of Forcela Nuvoloau. From here it is only a short distance to the summit of Monte Nuvolau at 2,574 m above sea level. On its rocky summit is the Rifugio Nuvolau mountain hut. Here we also had a beer and enjoyed the fantastic views. You can see the beautiful valley of Cortina d'Ampezzo, the Tofan group, Monte Pelmo, Marmolada, Piz Boe and other giants of the Dolomites. After resting we headed back, At first we followed the same path. So we descended to the saddle of Forcel Nuvolau. We passed Monte Averau. But just after that, we turned off and started descending on the trail. The path eventually led us to the magical lake Lago de Val Limides. (photo) Here we took a short rest again and then followed the trails back to the Passo Falzarego saddle.

Difficulty

An easy hike in the heart of the Dolomites to the scenic summit of Monte Nuvolau 2,574 m above sea level. The route is only on mountain trails. Even the altitude is not difficult. There is no technically demanding place.

Water availability

Water can be collected at the Passo Falzarego road saddle or in the stream at Lago de Val Limides. Due to the length of the hike, we had water with us (1.5 litres per person). In addition, it is possible to replenish supplies at the Rifugio Nuvolau and Rifugio Averau huts.

Sleeping options

This trek is very short, no overnight stay is necessary. However, if it is necessary, or if you would like to enjoy an evening at a mountain hut, it is possible to stay overnight at the huts on the route - Rifugio Averau and Rifugio Nuvolau.
