The Sas di Stria 2 477 m above sea level rises above the Passo Falzarego road saddle (photo) This is also where our ascent of this mountain began. At the saddle we left the car in the parking lot and followed the marked path towards the mountain. We followed the road for the first few dozen meters, but then we descended and continued on the trail. The trail eventually turned sharply and we started climbing up the ridge to the mountain itself. For the first few hundred meters, it's a classic mountain trail. Already here, fascinating views of the surrounding mountains open up, including the imposing Marmolada. (photo) Where the rocky base begins, the ascent changes radically. Here are the first trenches from WW1. Then follow the remains of the stone outcrops and the first shafts and tunnels. Everything is very intertwined. The shafts have occasional shafts cut into them, so there is light. (photo) But it is definitely better to have a torch. We ended up climbing to the top on our own, as we lost each other after a while. All the paths connect just below the summit and we climbed to the top by ladders. (photo) From Sas di Stria there are excellent views of the central part of the Dolomites. On the side towards the Passo Falzarego saddle, the mountain drops down perpendicular walls, so the views are aerial. (photo)

After a rest, we started to descend. The descent was as confusing as the ascent, everyone went their own way. Finally we met at the beginning of the trenches. After that we returned to the Passo Falzarego saddle, where a car was waiting for us in the parking lot.

Difficulty

An incredibly fun climb up the lookout mountain above the Passo Falzarego saddle. The climb itself is actually through the mountain. This mountain was an important strategic location in WW1, so it is criss-crossed with many tunnels, trenches and ladders. There are a large number of tunnels. It's a kind of mountain maze. But all the paths converge into one, which leads to the top of the mountain via two ladders.

Water availability

Water can be collected at the Passo Falzarego saddle. There is no water on the way, it is necessary to have a supply with you (1.5 litres of water per person is enough). Which is not a problem given the length.

Mountain peaks

From the Sass de Stria 2 477 m above sea level there are beautiful views of the Tofan group, which is located a short distance from this mountain. The mountains Marmolada, Piz Boe, Monte Cristallo, Civetta, Monte Pelmo and others can also be seen.

Danger

There are no dangerous places on the route. The mountain passes through various tunnels and shafts, but everything is well secured. Even a belay set for ferratas is not necessary.

Equipment

To climb this mountain, you need classic mountain clothing. Sturdy boots, good quality clothing, rain jacket. Although the ascent is marked on some maps as a belay route, it is not necessary to take ferrata equipment. There are ladders in the final passage, but they are safely embedded in the rock and there is no danger.

Attractions

Mount Sas di Stria was an important military point in World War I. It guarded the Passo Falzarego saddle, above which it rises. Therefore, its entire slope up to the top is interspersed with trenches, shafts, ladders and other remnants of the war period. It is therefore very entertaining to walk through this complex.
