A short trek with a great barbecue in Björnö in Sweden

Starting point

A large forest car park at the end of the road leading from Langvik, about 45 minutes' drive southeast of Stockholm. The parking fee is 50 SK per day (2022).

Description of the hike

From the parking lot we followed a wide forest path along the water surface. We thought it was a lake, but a glance at the map revealed that it was a deep sea bay. We saw the salinity of the water on the way back when we couldn't resist taking a refreshing dip. On the way, we came to the boat dock in the bay. We continued along this bay and turned slightly to the right. As we entered the forest, the wide path became a forest path, which was still very comfortable. We began to climb gently and soon enough came to a wooden lookout tower on a rock by the sea. The view of the rocky coastline and the sea dotted with small islands is beautiful.

We did not return to the road from the lookout tower, but continued along the open terrain to the coast. Technically it's not difficult, there is a rocky surface everywhere and it was comfortable. Eventually we reached the pointed end of a small peninsula. It was a beautiful place and we stayed there for a while. Then we returned to the main trail and reached a barbecue spot by the sea. The place by the bay is really amazing, the picturesque landscape is complemented by traditional wooden Nordic houses coloured red. Since we knew about this place, we were well equipped, so a fair bit of grilling took place.

Although reluctantly, after a good lunch we left the place and continued on our way. It leads from the sea to the forest. It continues around the lake and after a while we came to the second place where you can barbecue. We, however, had already continued on the wide path. The path eventually curved and we returned to the dock in the bay. Since we still didn't feel like going back directly to the parking lot, we made a little detour to the next cove.

First we followed the forest trail, then joined a wide forest road. This brought us to a fence that made it impossible to continue to the end of the peninsula. So we enjoyed a while on the rocks above the sea, then returned to the wide path. We followed it back to the car park. Just before we finally jumped into the sea as the weather was really great.

Difficulty

A very simple trip in amazing nature. The route is mostly on wide roads. There is also a passage where we walked on rocks. But very safe and wide. Part of the route was on forest trails. Just all sorts of things. The elevation gain is minimal, it's not physically or technically demanding. That's why it's ideal for families with children.

Water availability

Water refilling is possible at the barbecue area at Ramsviken Bay. We only had about 1 litre of water per person.

Mountain peaks

The trail doesn't go over any peaks, but a wooden lookout tower on a rock by the coast offers views of the wide surroundings.

Danger

The route is very easy and if you skip the visit to the rocky outcrop on the coast, you walk along a wide path the whole time. Even the short stretch along the rocks along the coast is easy and could be easily done by a small boy. So the only problem on the way were unexpectedly snakes. Thanks to the great weather we came across two vipers basking on the rocks after a long winter. They were more afraid of us than we were of them, but for some members of our group the encounter with them almost gave them a heart attack.

Food

There are two campsites on the trail where you can barbecue. We used the first one at Ramsviken Bay. We had charcoal and snacks with us and made a great lunch in the almost kitschy landscape.
